August | Friends of the Pyrmont Community Centre: Fostering Togetherness and Service

In the heart of Pyrmont, community thrives. As the population surged in the 2000s, local residents recognised the need for a gathering place—a sanctuary where they could share activities, forge connections, and for some, combat the pangs of solitude. The community centre needed the community to get involved. Thus, the Friends of the Pyrmont Community Centre (FoPCC) was born.

Now in its 15th year, FoPCC stands as a vibrant hub, weaving together over 50 diverse groups. Residents of all ages converge within its walls, drawn by a shared passion for community engagement. From the contemplative Book Club to the harmonious Pyrmont Sings!, from the curious Pyrmont History Group to the creatively inspired Arts and Crafts enthusiasts, FoPCC buzzes with life. Even the rhythmic strumming of the Ukulele group finds its place—a testament to the centre’s inclusivity.

At the heart of FoPCC’s legacy stand Mary Mortimer and the late Donald Denoon, original founders and forces for good. For more than two decades, they have called Pyrmont home, dedicating their time to ensuring that fellow residents find solace within the group. With many others, their tireless efforts have created a haven where everyone feels welcome.

With the completion of a major renovation of the community centre in October/November, the centre will again be filled with activities to engage local residents and workers, and a welcoming space for spending time with old and new friends.

The Annual Christmas in Pyrmont Street Fair is a crescendo in Pyrmont’s calendar. Each year, over 7,000 people gather—a kaleidoscope of music, stalls, and kids’ activities. Beyond the festive cheer lies a noble purpose: the proceeds directly benefit the local community, touching lives and fostering goodwill.

The Pyrmont community owes its success to the unsung heroes. These everyday champions form the backbone this community, embodying the spirit of service and compassion. They don’t seek recognition or applause; instead, they quietly weave connections, mend hearts, and uplift their fellow community members. Bottom of Form

In Pyrmont, FoPCC stands as a symbol of collective care and shared purpose, with Morton Real Estate being a steadfast supporter of the Friends of the Pyrmont Community Centre over the years.
